Countdown to Ebay.

Posted on May 31st, 2006 by phiber811, under John, Modding News, Publicity, main.

For those who are interested, we are in the final stages of prepping our first machines for ebay sale! Depending on dry time, they will either go up for sale tomorrow night, or friday night. Keep an eye here for the announcement.

Just for the sake of saying so, the two machines going up for sale will be an iBook G3 and an iBook G4. The G3 is painted in a Kandy Red to Kandy Black fade. The G4 is done in a kandy Orange fade, which I’ve painted previously before. (see the our mods gallery.) Both machines will be listed with full specs and accessories on ebay when they go up for sale. Likewise, they’ll get the full rundown in our ebay auctions section, once they’re up. I would offer preview photos now, but they literally got clear coated about 5 minutes ago. More to come, once we’re ready to go!

A New Toy

Posted on May 25th, 2006 by phiber811, under John, main.

In the interest of Geekery, and for the fun of it, I’ve gone ahead and started working on a Dashboard widget for MYM. So far, its pretty darned simple. What it does is pull the RSS feeds from the site, for quick browsing. You can click on them if you like, and get directed to the site.

Now, I know that Evan and I arent crazed post-happy monkeys like some some site owners, but if you have a morning internet routine, that involves dashboard (like mine does) this may be handy for you. Conversely, you can always dump our RSS url into NetNewsWire and do that too.

Be aware, this is the first copy of the widget, and I’m still working on it. It isnt perfect, but it will be one day!

the MYM FeedReader!

In other news, keep an eye out. If all goes according to plan, MYM will have two iBooks, a G3 and a G4, up on ebay next week!

An Open Letter To Apple.

Posted on May 23rd, 2006 by phiber811, under Service Rants.

Dear Apple Computer,

I would like to take this moment to remind you of your policy regarding your iPod music players. Currently, only Apple can fix iPods. This is done through your Apple Retail Stores, or mail in service. As per your decision, Apple Authorized Service Providers cannot repair the iPod. We cannot repair them under warranty, nor can we order parts for them. Likewise, we cannot, and do not offer discounts on the repair of iPods.

Please tell your geniuses in the Retail Stores to stop sending us customers who are annoyed at having to pay the price of a new iPod, to repair their current one.

Please have them stop telling people we can repair them, that we can order parts, and so on. It is not making life easier for us, and it further annoys the customer.

Thank you, and have a nice day!

Black Is Beautiful

Steve Jobs has proven once again, that he’s good at figuring out what beautiful is.The new MacBook’s are out, replacing the iBooks. They’re polycarbonate plastic, with the same design of the MacBook Pro’s, which should prove interesting for their internal design. Similarly, there seems to be no latching mechanism on the display housing or the top case. It’ll be interesting to see how they keep it shut for sleep. Here’s to hoping its not a throwback hinge design from the old clamshells. In any case, all the glorious news is available at www.apple.com, so go there for the full scoop.

(Steve, thanks for putting them out in black. You just reaffirmed our desire to customize things!)

(edit, at 8:55 AM)

We’d like to note that in fact the MacBook uses a magnetic system to hold the lid closed. As interesting as this sounds, the jury will be out until it starts to break.

Also, we’d like to note that with the release of the MacBook, Apple has killed the 12″ Powerbook G4. No longer is it orderable from the store online, nor does it have a page on apple’s site. Thank you to those who made it possible for Apple to do away with that little paraiah of a computer. It was on our “Most Hated” list. A pain to work on, easy to break, it was never even close to our favourite. We’re glad its gone. Of course, we say all of this while muttering a prayer that the new machines arent harder to work on. We’ll update when we know!

Ebay…

Posted on May 13th, 2006 by phiber811, under John, Modding News, main.

When we first started this adventure, the local Washington Apple Pi user group had a bi-annual garage sale. Twice a year, we’d roll out to the Northern VA Comm. College campus in Annandale, VA, and sell a bunch of stuff. We always brought out custom stuff to offer to the local masses. It was, in a word, awesome.

Unfortunately, the Pi has seen fit to do away with the Garage Sales. Saying that we’re saddened by this would be an understatement. We loved the garage sales. But its now in the past, and we have to deal with the present. Or rather, a growing collection of machines.

In the next couple weeks/months, we’re going to be testing the Ebay waters for our custom stuff. As can be seen in the gallery, we’re no slouches. We’ve got some good stuff to our name. So you can expect that whatever we offer will be up to par. At the moment, we’ve got several iBooks of varying spec, that are in the process of being modded. Once they’re ready, we’re going to throw them up onto ebay with a low starting bid, and a reasonable reserve, that will cover the cost of the machine, and our labors. The “Ebay Auctions” link will be kept current and will link to whatever we happen to have up and for sale.

When the time is right, you’ll have the chance to own one of our creations. So, keep an eye peeled. We’ll let you know when the game is on. For our own personal interest, if you’re interested in us offering machine on Ebay, add a comment to this post and let us know. We’d be thoroughly curious to see what people think!
