Apple wins.

The iPhone launches today. In the east, its already available. In the west, it’ll be available in about 90 minutes. Vive le iPhone.

At the moment, I’m steering clear, as I cant afford it. However, my colleague Tom has started calling it the Jesus Phone. As in “Jesus came back. He’s a phone now.” Yes, that bit is courtesy of PVPonline.com

Now, here’s what strikes me. AT&T partnered up with Apple on this deal, and got exclusive carrier rights. Score. However, their competitor, Verizon, doesnt get it at all. Inter company memos blow off the impact of the device, and claim that they have products and services that can compete, likewise, the iphone was just a product to prop up AT&T.

Oh, did I mention it, but verizon wireless stores will be staying open late today, in order to offer products and services to customers, in lieu of the iPhone.

I hate to mention it, but verizon doesnt get it.This isnt about products and services. This is about a device. A device people will line up to buy. They dont care what it costs, or what the service costs. they dont care who the provider is. They want the device, and what it can do. Moreover, they want HOW it can do those things. This is ipod marketing on crack. The hype is huge. The device is awesome. unless it explodes on first use, curses your soul, and kills your dog, while playing the bay city rollers, its going to succeed. And in that respect, verizon and t-mobile cant compete.

Before 6PM, it was an even playing field. everyone had similar phones and contracts. Now, AT&T has the iphone, and everyone else doesnt. What does this mean? In terms of the awesome, AT&T wins. Verizon, t-mobile, nextel, they cant compete. Hell, Vodafone’s stock hit a 5 year high on news that they’d be the european carrier. C’mon now. How can you hope to beat out the awesome?

I’m sorry Verizon. You’ve been good to me over the years. But I may end up ditching you for the iphone.

Looking for a full-time gig.
